Pre-employment physical required. DUTIES:
This position is located in Engineering Service at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. As an Air Conditioning Equipment Operator, you will be respon! sible for the safe and efficient operation of the Chiller Plant and all HVAC Equipment throughout the medical center. Duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Repairs and maintains a variety of large commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems;
  • Supports equipment with complex problems and extensive repairs require judgment to locate malfunctions;
  • Installs pumps, rearranges steam lines, valves, etc. and troubleshoots electrical and instrument control systems with the Chiller Plant, in gas and oil burners, air conditioning panel boards and graphic control boards;
  • Maintains charts, logs, and other historical data pertinent to plant operations;
  • Works with medical gas, electrical, plumbing, nurse call, and hardware systems, making emergency calls when needed to investigate and correct identified problems.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday through Friday, ! 7:30AM to 4:00PM.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c ). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element.

Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

You wi! ll be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

  • Ability to do the work of an Air Conditioning Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
  • Possession of valid state driverÂ's license. (SCREEN OUT)
  • Possession of a current CFC/NCFC Certification. (SCREEN OUT)
  • Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation and repair.
  • Skill in the operation of various types of air conditioning and air conditioning related equipment.
  • Ability to interpret instructions and specifications.
  • Skill in the use of measuring instruments.
Physical effort and work conditions :
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving prolonged walking, standing, and lifting, repeated bending, and will at times have to work prolonged hours. Frequently carry and set up parts and equipment t! hat weigh up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: You must! practice safety in all work because of the hazards involved, such as inhalation of refrigerant during accidental release of refrigerant, direct contact with refrigerant in eyes and skin, working around high voltage and secondary voltage systems, climbing to high elevations such as cooling tower, working on top of air handling units where there are numerous hazards which could cause head injuries. You will be working in areas where steam and hot water systems are installed, with the possibility of receiving burns. You will handle large pieces of equipment, such as electric motors, which weigh in excess of five hundred pounds. Exposure to sudden temperature changes going in and out of the deep freezers or conditioned and unconditioned spaces.

Well Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that exceed the minimum qualification of the position and who are proficient in ! most of the requirements of the job;

Qualified - applicants possessing knowledge, skills and abilities that meet the minimum qualifications of the position.
