Duties:

Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is located in Medicine Service, serving as the Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Physician. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The Medicine Service provides
care in multiple settings: inpatient medicine units, intensive care units
(ICUÂ's), outpatient primary care and specialty clinics, and the Emergency
Department (ED). Pulmonary-CC & Sleep Medicine Physicians assigned to the
pulmonary consult service or ICUÂ's provide acute evaluation and care for
inpatients in those settings. Pulmonary-CC/Sleep physicians assigned to the
outpatient specialty clinics provide evaluation, consultation, and direct care
for outpatients in that setting and/or the ED.

The Chief of the Medicine
Service, assisted by the Section Chief for Pulmonary and/or t! he Section Chief for
Sleep Medicine Services, is/are respo! nsible for the overall clinical and
administrative functions of the Pulmonary-CC staff physicians.

Pulmonary-CC/Sleep
physicians are able to perform all services required in the practice of
Pulmonary-CC/Sleep medicine in the context of the VA system and their clinical
privileges. They are to document appropriately in the electronic record.
Educational experiences are also provided to appropriate health care personnel
who are involved in inpatient care (such as admitting or consultative service
team members including fellows, residents, medical students, nurse
practitioners, social workers, physician assistant and nursing students,
utilization management personnel, and ED staff).

Application
of accepted protocols for assessment of individual patients presenting with
various pulmonary conditions and critical illnesses according to accepted
community and VA standards including, but not limited to: Hospita! l and Community-Acquired
pneumonia, COPD, Asthma, Interstitial Lung Diseases, Lung Cancers, Sepsis and
Septic Shock, Respiratory Failure, Overdoses, and Complex Critical Illness,etc.
Pulmonary-Critical Care physicians should also be expected to perform a variety
of endoscopic (bronchoscopy with biopsy, Endobronchial ultrasound) and
percutaneous procedures (thoracentesis, paracentesis, invasive hemodynamic
monitoring, central venous line placement, etc.) in
accordance with local VA credentialing and privileging requirements related to
their individual areas of expertise.
Pulmonary-Critical
Care/Sleep physicians are expected to perform admissions and provide
consultative care (directly and via e-Consults) to inpatient and outpatient
physicians including patients referred from primary care clinics locally and
from other Southern Tier VISN sites, as well as other specialty services from
within the medical center.
Pulmo! nary-Critical Care/Sleep
Physicians will be expected to see patient! s in the inpatient and outpatient
settings, and meet all relevant access and performance goals for pulmonary
clinic patients. They will also be
expected to be able to assess and manage various patients with a broad spectrum
of sleep disorders, including: Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Obesity-Hypoventilation
Syndrome, Restless Leg Syndromes, etc. They are expected to be able to
interpret sleep studies and develop appropriate patient management plans,
including the use of home oxygen, CPAP, BiPAP, and related modalities, as well
as prescribe sleep medication regimens where appropriate.
Staff Pulmonary-CC/Sleep
physicians are ultimately responsible for the oversight of all aspects of
pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine delivered to their assigned
patients.

Staff Pulmonary-CC/Sleep physicians
provide or assist fellows, residents, medical students, and nurse practitioners
in the proper evaluation and tre! atment
of the patient, as well as actively participate in corrective actions
when complications occur related to indicated medical/pulmonary-critical care
interventions.

Qualifications & Evaluations

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • U.S. Citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Must be board certified or eligible.
Preferred Experience

1. Background in ongoing pulmonary clinics and sleep clinics.

2. Board certification in Pulmonary Critical Care, Sleep Medicine and Internal Medicine .

3. Experience with academic medical practice in a t! eaching hospital.
