School Nurse - 2012-2013 School Year

Location or Department: Multiple Locations

Job Summary: The primary function of the school nurse is to initiate appropriate action in a variety of health problems through direct care, remedial care, referral, or consultation.

Requirements:
Education: B.S.N. - R.N. License (Indiana)

License: Indiana School Services: Nurse

Experience:

  • At least 3-5 years experience preferably in Community Health or Pediatric Nursing.
  • Must possess successful experiences working with a diverse population of students and faculty.
Major Responsibilities:Nursing Proficiencies:
  • Provides Direct Health Care.
  • Renders emergency First Aid care.
  • Administers medication according to IPS policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates health status/complaints of students and takes action.
  • Provides/obtains relevant information to/from physicians, hospitals, and other agencies for referred students.
  • Performs and supervises skilled nursing procedures as ordered by student's physician.
  • Provides Preventive Health Care
  • Schedules and coordinates screening programs.
  • Recognizes and acts on communicable diseases present in the school/community.
  • Acts as a resource on immunization needs.
  • Identifies and reports on environmental hazards.
  • Provides Health Education
  • Acts as a resource person to students and staff members regarding health education.
  • Teaches the principles of health promotion and disease prevention to individuals and groups.
  • Assumes responsibility for in-service programs for school personnel and others regarding health-related issues of students and others.
  • Conducts Health Counseling
  • Encourages and refers parents to obtain medical and dental services for children.
  • Counsels students, teachers and parents on health problems at school and in the community.
  • Gives guidance and support to students with known medical problems.
Management Skills and Professional Characteristics:
  • Adheres to Timelines and Procedures
  • Maintains clinic daily log.
  • Records data on health record as needed.
  • Maintains First Aid supplies and health center.
Interpersonal Relationships:
  • Demonstrates Positive Interpersonal Relationships
  • Practices good human relations with students, staff, parents, and community.
  • Promotes positive self-image in students.
  • Exhibits Professional Behavior
  • Demonstrates self-control.
Staff and Professional Obligations:
  • Adheres to Management Requirements and Procedures
  • Is punctual and maintains high attendance standards.
  • Maintains and submits accurate records as required by law, board policy and administrative guidelines.
  • Follows building and district rules and procedures in performing assigned responsibilities.
  • Collaborates with teachers and other special service personnel to provide appropriate learning opportunities for students.
  • Participates in continuing education programs to increase knowledge, update skills, and maintain certification.
  • Promotes Parent Involvement
  • Handles contracts with parents/guardians in an appropriate manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality concerning information about students and their families.
  • Meets with parents/guardians when necessary and appropriate to discuss student health needs.
