RN is a peri-operative registered nurse who works in collaboration with the surgeon and health care team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The RN must have acquired the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the expanded role of RN clinical practice. The RN performs independently in the scrub and circulating role in the operating room in the following surgical services: general, vascular, orthopedics, podiatry, neurosurgery, urology, thoracic, ENT, dental, GYN, ophthalmology, and plastic/reconstructive surgery.

Peri-operative RN functions include but are not limited to:
a) Positioning the patient, preparing and draping the surgical site. b) Knowledge, use, handling, and care of surgical instrumentation c) Preparation of the sterile field d) Knowledge, use and handling of surgical critical and non-critical RME commonly used in the operating room (including but not limited to: imaging equipment, microscopes, operating telescopes/video equipment, ESU and laser units, operating tables, autoclaves, warmers, ultrasounds). e) Handles surgical specimens according to policy f) Performance of appropriate draping procedures for surgical procedures. g) Completes patient documentation according to policy. h) Compliance patient safety policies including but not limited to the following: surgical counts, surgical fire prevention, peri-operative emergency situations, immediate use sterilization, use of critical and non-critical RME, maintenance of the sterile field, appropriate traffic flow patterns, correct site surgery, specimen handling, medication labeling and handling.

The scope of practice of all registered nurses in all areas of clinical practice is defined in the four dimensions outlined in the Nurse Qualification Standards, dated March 17, 2009, and is specific to the grade and level:

Nurse II: Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.

Specific practice settings include Operating Room/PACU. The practice or each registered nurse is based on knowledge, experience, and research and has a direct impact on patient outcomes in the assigned area and for the facility
